The historical town of Halifax
The undulating town of Halifax, with its steep hills, was once the economical hub of the West Riding of Yorkshire, being a critical cog in the UK’s wool industry. Indeed, the Grade I listed Piece Hall, an example of quintessential Georgian architecture, was built in the 1770s to provide an area where handloom weavers could sell their woollen cloth “pieces”. Originally designed to accommodate 315 merchants, it is now the last surviving manufacturers’ hall in Britain.
In more recent times, the industrial buildings of the past have undergone numerous regeneration projects. The reclamation of Dean Clough is one such example of this. Previously one of the largest carpet factories in the world, at around half a mile long, this has been converted into office spaces for 150 companies, art galleries and much more.
